Mantle Musings

While waiting for the UPS truck this morning, and ignoring the laundry and the dirty dishes, I decided that my mantle needed tweaking. What is it about mantles that make them so challenging to accessorize? I find it difficult to achieve balance, without too much boring symmetry. Adding color without too much clutter is also a challenge.

This is what my mantle looked like before:
The scale is all off, with my big, beautiful B dwarfing the other accessories. While I love my apothecary jars, they are too small to balance the B, and don’t have much impact. I tried elevating them on some books and boxes, but that just added clutter.
So, what’s a girl to do? I went shopping, that’s what. I found some bodacious candlesticks at Hobby Lobby (50% off, of course):

Now THESE can stand up to a big, bossy capital letter. I was disappointed that they didn’t have a third size, you know that “rule of threes” thing and all, so I added the wooden box.

I kept the books and the largest apothecary jar, with some moss for texture and a snowflake for a little dose of Ohio in February reality.

Now I think I’ve achieved balance and color without clutter. What do you think? Care to share your mantle musings?

Ever notice how difficult it is to get a good picture of a mantle with a mirror above it?

Have a fabulous weekend, everyone! I’ve got a Star Wars birthday party for my newly 7 year old son to host, and a BEDROOM to paint!

  1. Looks wonderful! I am really struggling with my mantle. I just got a beautiful new picture for Christmas…one I have been asking for for years. It is picture of the Savior, and now everything I try to put on my mantle seems to detract from it. I’m just not happy with any of it! So right now I have a bare mantle and it looks so blah!!

  2. That looks really good, much more to scale! Wish I had a mantle to decorate, but it’s in the man-room and I’ve been sworn NOT to decorate in there. :)

  3. I thought it looked good with the first picture then I kept reading and saw the other photos. I like it better now.

I have a mantle and I hate everything on it. I just might have to do some re-arranging next week. If you know what I mean. :)

    Good luck with the party!!

  4. Yes, you’ve reached the “ahhhhh…” moment, where it really all works together. It looks great! Don’t you love walking into the room and seeing the fruit of your labor, and seeing the mantel in its smashing loveliness! :)

  5. I have a corner mantle and it drives me nuts. My solution – put a flat screen tv up there and then cover it up with a garage sale find painting. :) My fireplace is a gas one, so the mantle is really deep. I think I’d rather have a more shallow one, like yours. Love your big B! :)

  6. You work it girl! I find a mantel is always hard to balance. I never feel as though mine is good enough and just when I get it right…I change it up again. Those chunky candlesticks are looking good..God bless hobby lobby~

  7. You gotta love Hobby Lobby and their 50% off! I have noticed that they often only have two sizes of candlesticks (I like 3’s too) sometimes I will buy another of the smaller one and then fool the look with the size of the candles or prop one of them on some books! Looks great!
