Headboard Heaven And A Butterfly!

It's Done!!

That old caterpillar has FINALLY metamorphosized (I have no idea if that's a word or not) into the BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY!

First things first. THE HEADBOARD. You knew that the headboard made from the home store door won, right?

I used a door that we already had, bought some trim from Home Depot for less than $20, and spent $4 on paint. The original door looked like this (no, I didn't use this one):

Now it looks like this:

WOOHOO!! AIN'T IT GRAND?? I sincerely HEART how this turned out. After hubby had glued the trim on, I spray painted the whole thing, Heirloom White, of course.

You're right, now the bedside tables need a coat of Heirloom White. I'll get to that. And I still need a lampshade.

I used a dry brush with the paint color from the shelves to weather and age the door, wiping it down with an old T-shirt as I went. Here's a close-up of the finish:

My hubby hung the headboard, that part is WAY beyond my skills. He attached a 1x2 board with screws to the wall studs, then screwed hooks in to that. He hung the headboard from those hooks by the original door hinges. This way, no holes were drilled in to the actual door, so if we ever need to use this as a door again, we can just take off the trim and repaint it. We ( and by "we", I mean "he") also removed the handle, the hole where it once was is hidden by the pillows.

Here's another picture, 'cuz I just LOVE lookin' at it. My hubby wants to know if we're done with the *&#*&%&** bedroom now.
The only thing left to do is find some art for above the bed, and I PROMISED that he wouldn't have to help with that, so I said "well, you're done."

I've linked this post up to Donna's Saturday Nite Special at Funky Junk Interiors. You're invited to the party, so check it out!

  1. As always, beautiful job, Kimm! I really love it!

I made our headboard from a door and trim, too, but I covered it in fabric instead of painting it and it looks totally different from yours. Isn't it amazing how a door can look SO different? I've seen them used for tables, bookcases, desks, etc. The biggest pain is getting the dang thing home from the store!

  4. Love it! I just told hubby that this is on my short list of projects. Our master bed has no headboard. Seriously.

He cringes when I tell him I am doing another project so either I will do it or get a new bedroom set! Either way, I win! :-)

  11. Wow - I keep reading about these transformations that are so inspiring! I wish I knew about metamorphasis Monday; I would have done a post on my bathroom or my entry! Is it every Monday or is this a one time thing? How inspirational!

I love your bedroom re-do. It was genius to use a headboard - it looks so nice, like a totally custom-made headboard. I also like to see how people do their pillow arrangements. My Costco bedding is in terrible shape, and I need to get a new bedspread and pillow shams, I just can't decide what configuration to use. It looks like you have a couple of euro shams in the back - they add nice height.

  13. Clever! I think I've got an old door floating around here somewhere. Was this a queen sized bed??

  14. Hi everyone, thanks for your nice comments. to answer some questions: Yes, Metamorphosis Monday is every Monday, visit Between Naps on the Porch for details. (there's a link at the end of my post)
Yes, we have a queen-size bed, the door is wider than the bed, but with the tables there it doesn't show too much. I think it would look fabulous with a king sized bed too.

  26. Hey Kimm! Love the new headboard! It looks great!

I'm so excited! My friend sold me an old door she had and couldn't get rid of. She even had it at a garage sale with a "make offer" sticker on it and it didn't sell. I asked her what kind of offer she meant, "like $5????" She said take it for $5! Anyway, now I have a really cool OLD door and I'm thinking I'm going to make a headboard with it. Thanks for the inspiration!

  33. Awesome! I will have to share this idea with a friend of mine - she and her husband have no headboard at all.

Heh heh I found a can of heirloom white in my paint stash this morning! It's going on a project I'm working on. :)

  36. Oh my gosh, it looks SO amazing!!!! Love how it all turned out! We plan on doing a door headboard too, how cool is that? I love being able to see it in your room first, now I can get an even better idea of it. Woot! Great job! And I'm cracking up about your hubby's comment. We are tackling two projects at once right now so I'm sure hearing the phrase, "Is it done yet?" will be in my near future.

  47. Love it! My headboard is also a door and even though I keep thinking I need a real bedroom set, I just can't part with the door and the antique side tables that match the odd color green it is...

  48. There are so many things to do with doors. I have a work table in the garage that was built out of a garage door. I am dying to make a corkboard out of one (cork in each of the recessions of the door). I love what you have done with yours. Doors are just so pretty!

  51. Kimm, I soooo get the door love! Awesome work! I could hang a door most anywhere and be feelin' it. I like the distressed finish you applied to it too. Really warms it up some.

And I had to laugh at the comment about your hubby's thinking. Tell him NO... us designers are never done. It just can't be done. Cuz next week we'll find something else of course. You know... one must transition their environment.

Guess what I'm sayin' is, buy him a new 'everyday' toolbelt. :)

    Thanks for joining the party!!
