Trash to Treasure Tuesday

Remember this?

This "new" centerpiece for my kitchen table was part of my FREE spring decor update.

Since I was spending $0, I used this pie plate/tart pan to display my pears, something I already had in the cupboard.

But I have a "thing" about FLAT design. What do I mean? I think it's more INTERESTING when items of varying heights are used in a display, or VIGNETTE, as a real designer might say.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE anything on a pedestal. At my weekly Goodwill trip, I saw THIS (I only knocked over 3 old ladies to get to her):

Don't panic, it's upside down. Of course, I started painting BEFORE the BEFORE picture. This beauty started out stained that brown color in the middle.

After a good sanding (gosh, I HATE that part), I first painted her the same color as my great room walls (SW Humble Gold).

Then came two coats of my old stand-by, Heirloom White. I used two different colors, so that I could gently sand the edges to reveal the base coat. I like some depth to my finishes.

Geez, I like HEIGHT and DEPTH. Is that why I always feel like I'm on a ROLLER COASTER?

I sanded SO gently that it's hard to see in this picture.

Next came a few coats of polyurethane to the inside of the bowl, and VOILA!

Yep, the pears are GONE. I guess I should just be happy that my family eats LOTS of fruit, but I hate when it interferes with my DECOR, you know what I mean?

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

  2. Very pretty. I hate when I forget to take before pictures. Usually I just do that with food. Because I like to eat. :)

Your note about eating the decor was funny. I wouldn't like to admit the number of times I have had second thoughts about eating a piece of fruit because it looks so pretty in the bowl. lol

  9. Funny (re: your family eating fruit). I saw some "fake" fruit at Ross for cheap - like $5 for 6 or so pieces.

  19. I love what you did with the bowl but be sure to coat it with bees wax so that it is food safe or put a plastic liner in it to keep the food away from the polyurethaned finish.

  21. I know what you mean about the fruit! My in-laws were on their way to our house this weekend and my son ate an orange that threw off everything in my little bowl! :-)

  26. Hi there!

Really enjoy your blog. Great redo on the pedestal bowl.

To answer your question. Yep' I painted the floorcloth free hand. Most of my designs are freehand. I do use stencils on some of the more intricate scrollwork designs, but other than that, it's just me and the paintbrush.

    Thanks for your kind comments.

    Have a Happy Day

  32. Just adding to the gazillion comments in saying that I love this! I sure wish I had "the eye" while at Goodwill. I occasionally find something, but I'm sure I'm passing up more than I should!

  33. I am never creative enough to see what something "could" be...you are so creative!

  34. You know, instead of sanding you could use some Tri-sodium-phosphat...(Is that how you spell that?) TSP for short. You just mix it with water and wash your piece your wanting to paint and it dulls the finish so your paint will stay on. Its about 3 bucks at any hardware store... in the paint section. Just ask for "tsp" :-)
