Today I looked for projects involving old windows. Old, chippy architectural salvage makes my heart skip a beat. And although I don't actually HAVE any old windows in my possession, I want to be prepared with some fabulous ideas for when I DO find one. Or ten.
After drooling over these pictures, I can tell ya, I'm lookin' a LITTLE harder.
LOVE this window box. I'm not sure how I'd attach it to the house, though, my husband is a "no nails in the siding" kind of guy.
Just look at this greenhouse made entirely of old windows. Oh. my. gosh.
This genius used the windows to create a "wall" on her porch. My heart is really racing now.
Now here's a practical reinvention. I could store more cookies in my cupboards if I could just get those darn pots and pans out of there.
I have a sofa just BEGGING for a table like this.
Any other ideas for old windows? If you've used any in your decor, where did you find them?

I found a set of three old windows -- five bucks each -- at a garage sale, and I printed out 8x10 family pics in black and white and put them behind each glass pane in two of the windows. (My youngest daughter claimed the third frame.) Because my walls are white, I then put some red and white ticking behind the pics . . . looks like each pic is matted with ticking . . . then I hung the two window panes above my sofa and flanked them with old red shutters. I love, love, love it! (In fact, I think I'll blog about them later this week or early next week!)

ReplyDeleteI found a large (46" square)old window on craigslist for $20 and hung it in a large plain square window in my 2 story stairwell.
ReplyDeleteI also found 2 58"x24" windows at a garage sale for $5 for the pair. They are hung on either side of my fireplace. (I blogged about both, 06/12/09 and 10/11/08.)
I love love love old windows. A month or so ago I picked up a pile windows. I gave a bunch away but kept a few for myself. I put together a post a bit ago about window inspiration. ReplyDeleteI should take a shot of my neighbor's window green house. It is so cool and has all sorts of different sizes of windows and even doors. It is total whimsy and makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteRight now, I have two windows that I found via Craigs list last week disguising my pump house. It isn't that it is so ugly, it just isn't very appealing and you see it from every window in the front of the house.
I have another large on over the jacuzzi that doesn't work. This is a rental, so I can't take it out, but by putting the window on top and adding flowers, it hides it some.
Thank you for the wonderful ideas. I bought 30 windows at the flea market for $3.00 each and want to make a tabletop greenhouse but I don't know what to use to hold it together. Any ideas.

I love to decorate with old windows. They have such character. I especially love the pot rack idea. If only my ceilings were high enough to accomodate it.

ReplyDeleteI've blogged a lot about using old windows lately, especially since I found a huge stack of them on the side of the road back at Thanksgiving. I've made a chalkboard out of one, put 4 together with L brackets for a table base, I've taped photos to them for artwork & even used one to make a fireplace screen. I'm about to build a cabinet out of some more of them, too. (Tutorial will be on my blog, I promise).
I know you'll find something fabulous for them.
Just wondering but am I the only one having a problem with linking my Trash to Treasure?

a great place to get old windows for cheap is to shop at your local habitat for humanity restore, the ones in my area charge between $1.50 to $3 for a single pane window of useful sizes. watch the paint, it may be lead at times. tons of weathered windows cheap! and it helps a good cause.
