Add Some Architecture

Hello friends, it’s my favorite time of year again.

No, not spring, althought that sounds nice, we had FROST on the ground just yesterday.

I’m talking about FLEA MARKET SEASON.

It may be flea market season all year round where you live, and if it is I’m insanely jealous, but here in Ohio we have limited access to other people’s JUNK.

One of my favorite things to shop for at flea markets is ARCHITECTURAL elements for my home.  I live in a fairly new house, built in 2000, and other than a little crown moulding, there’s not much interesting architecture.  I know that some of you live in gorgeous homes built in eras when corbels and fancy mantels were common place, but the rest of us like to add just a few of those elements to our sometimes plain tract house decor.

THAT’S where flea markets come to save the day.  Architectural elements are fairly easy to find, and though some may consider them TRASH, they become instant TREASURES in your home.

Check these out from Better Homes and Gardens

Old mantels are some of my favorite pieces.  Fake yourself a fireplace, or use one as a headboard.
Oh my, what a fabulous way to add texture to a plain bathroom.  That paneling on the tub is just divine.  Love the chippy vanity too, by the way.
Love ceiling medallions?  Old sheet music and a beautifully detailed frame make for a gorgeous ceiling.
Shutters are another fave.  Prop them on your mantel, hang them on the wall and use them to organize small papers.  See?  Architectural salvage can even be practical.
Not a flea marketeer?  Check out your local Habitat Restore, or an architectural salvage store for fabulous finds.
Have a great day everyone, and link up those projects!  Thanks so much to everyone that parties with us every Tuesday.  I visit as many of you as I can, and your creativity astounds me!

  1. I’m seeing more and more people using picture frames in ways they weren’t originally intended to be. I can safely say that I’ve never seen one used as a ceiling medallion before! Very quirky and fun!

  2. I love the shutters especially the colour. I also adore the fireplace in the first picture – we have an antique fire surround and I’ve been dying to paint it for some time – I’m going to run this picture by my husband to see what he thinks!

  3. Beautiful pics of thrifty finds! I was wondering, usually when I go to a flea market, it’s because I ran into it purely out of luck! Do you know if these things are posted or advertised in certain areas?

  4. I live in one of those places that have year-round garage/yard sales, it almost makes up for the loooonnnnggg summers down here! Thanks for the linky party.

  5. I am totally hooked on resale shops, goodwill and garage sales. I never thought in a million years what treasures are out there or what you can do to up cycle.
    Love your blog

  6. Any suggestions on how to attach the fake fireplace mantel to the wall as in the picture above? I’m not sure how to get it flush with the wall because of the baseboard. I don’t want to cut out the baseboard. Any ideas are appreciated!
