Hi friends and reinventors.
A few days ago I read an awesome post by Edie, on Life In Grace.
It was a post about mantel decor, and it was very inspiring. Edie’s writing always inspires me, but I especially enjoyed this post about mantel gift giving.
Edie’s mantel gift giving advice? She recommends giving your mantel:
“Something alive, something to lean, something you love, something with sheen.”
Is that not the best mantel decorating gifting advice you’ve ever heard?
Edie also wrote that a mantel should sing, and tell a story.
As you can tell, my mantel was telling a sad story. And singing a sad, sad song. A “She destroyed Christmas and totally ignored Valentine’s Day” song.
Doesn’t that sound like a new country music hit? I’d like Keith Urban to record it.
I decided to follow Edie’s wise advice and write a new story for my sad mantel.
I took my gift card left from Christmas to Home Depot, bought a quart of Behr’s Black Pepper paint, and changed up the whole fireplace. I even painted the tile and it was easy. Really really like this color. It’s a very dark charcoal gray. I think you will be seeing more of this color in my house.
Let’s review Edie’s advice:
Something alive. Found the plant at Lowe’s (another gift card :)). It says it needs “low light”, so I’m hoping it will live here. I gave the plant the gift of height with some colorful books.
Something to lean. Found the cute bird print at Lowe’s also. It has great color and reminds me of spring.
Something to love. I’ve been in love with the old chippy window since the day I dug it out of a pile at the Springfield Flea Market. It makes a great backdrop for all seasons of decor.
Something with sheen. I plopped the new plant into a galvanized metal bucket and added a shiny multi-color pear that my daughter made in ceramics class.
My mantel’s story has a happy ending, I’m loving the new look. Now if I can just get ahold of Keith Urban…
Edie’s having a Loving Your Mantel Instagram party on Friday. I’d love to see you there! Use hashtag #loveyourmantel.
