Whatcha up to?
I had a day off from my day job today, I got a little “bee” in my bonnet, and dove in to a master bedroom update.
Have you ever had a proverbial bee in your bonnet?
Unfortunately, it happens to me quite frequently. I should sell honey. ;)
Anywho…now that I have finally settled on a color scheme for our first floor (see my favorite paint colors here), and sort of have a style, (modern cottagey with some industrial thrown in), our master bedroom style wasn’t fitting in.
Buzz, buzz, buzz…
There is no way I could justify a budget, so I set out to change it up a bit for no money. No spend decorating, my favorite.
Here’s a before pic, for good measure.
What I still loved about the room: the contrast of dark and light, the cottagey prints, the door headboard, and the platters above the headboard.
What I wanted to change: the dark color from brown to my beloved Cracked Pepper, the art above the bed to something more modern, and the accent colors.
I started by grabbing my quart of Cracked Pepper, and a paint brush, then toured my room deciding where to add/change the contrast.
First, the table tops were changed out for the dark gray I love.
I swear, I dusted this just yesterday…
The frame around my “necklace art” received a swipe of paint too.
I took down the curtains, and haven’t decided what to do with them yet. I’d love to lighten up the walls, but that’s not going to happen any time soon.
The old barn print above the bed will find a new home (hopefully at someone else’s house) and I added a Cracked Pepper painted modern monogram.
I really love how it looks. And yes, I know I need to move the platters over a bit. The monogram is centered, but apparently no measuring happened when the platters were originally hung. Oops.
The big B is paper mache and the smaller letters are pine. All are from Joann’s.
My next project was to remove the floral fabric from the room. I’m over the multi-colored look.
I like the color of the duvet (it’s called Porcelein Blue, a softer shade of the aqua I’ve splashed around downstairs), but I have recently discovered that I HATE DUVET COVERS. My down comforter is a lovely shade of ivory, and duvet covers aren’t worth the hassle to me, so…
I cut it up and made a pillow case for this humongous body pillow.
Please don’t call the decorating police.
The “nap” pillow is sewn from canvas drop cloth fabric and dark gray felt. It’s fun. And I don’t want to ever forget to take a nap, so there’s that.
So that’s the update so far. It feels simpler, more modern and graphic, and I like that.
What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Have a great week!
