Trash to Treasure One Dollar Wall Art

Hi friends!

Have you done the school supply shopping thing yet?  I am amazed every year by a couple of things.

First, the cost.  Geez.

Second, the difference between boy school supply shopping, and girl school supply shopping.  Double Geez.

The boys didn’t want to go, didn’t care what they got, and are fine re-using stuff from last year.

The girls?  Well…there are agonizing hours (at least it feels like it) choosing colors, and styles, and brands.

And those are just the mechanical pencils…

Everything left from last year is “junk.”  It must be replaced with shiny and new.

I did put my foot down about colored pencils.  We have 3,000,000 of them; they just needed a little love and sharpening.

Kind of like our decorating, huh?  Most of the time there’s no reason to buy new, the stuff we already have just needs a little love and sharpening.

Or sharpieing, in this case.  ;)

If you’ve been around here awhile, you know that one of my goals for this year is to update our dining room, and turn it in to a multi-use space that fits in better with our casual and fun house.

I finally realized that one doesn’t have to have a formal dining room that one never uses.

The walls will be painted very soon, but in the meantime, I have some fun smaller projects planned.

The first is some fun plate wall art.

I had some random thrift store plates around the house, because I kind of can’t resist buying them.  I thought it would be fun to mix those in with my ironstone.

So I grabbed a plain white plate, sprayed it Heirloom White to blend better with the ironstone, and drew on it with a fabulous bronze Sharpie (affiliate link) that I found for $1 at the grocery store.

Do you LOVE metallic pens too?

The plates flank the chalkboard.  And I’m loving the bronze with my trash to treasure chandelier.

Clearly this pattern is hand drawn, not measured and no where near straight.

And that’s just the way I like it.

    1. Hi Becky! I use this plate for wall art, so I’m not washing it with soap. You can draw with Sharpies on dishes that you would wash, but I think you have to bake them in the oven for a bit first. There are some great resources on Pinterest. Have fun!

  1. What a neat idea! I just bought three dollar store plates to play with. It’s easy, inexpensive and looks great! Gold sharpie, good thinking too!
