Outdoor Furniture Makeovers: A Trash To Treasure Blog Hop

Hey hey everyone!  I’m so glad you’re here!  I am thrilled to be hosting a little outdoor themed trash to treasure party today with some of my very favorite people.  At our house we’ve been working hard on some outdoor furniture makeovers, and I am dying to show them to you.

Brace yourselves, my friends, the before shot is hideous.  You may want to cover your eyes.

So we bought that patio set several years ago.  I guess I liked it at the time.  I was kind of into brown, and for that I have no explanation.  The table top is a metal frame with 12×12 ceramic tiles.  They are a b_tch to clean.  I would have loved to replace the entire set for Rachel’s graduation party,  but that wasn’t in the budget.

I talked the engineer into building a wood top for the table, and I set about painting the chairs.  First I spray painted the chair frames and the table frame with textured black spray paint.  Stay tuned for an entire post of Nerd Notes on the table top.

The chair backs and seats got two coats of Rustoleum’s Chalked Paint in Linen White, and then I painted grain sack stripes (also Rustoleum’s Chalked Paint, but in Charcoal this time) to bring some farmhouse style outside.

Check out my very first Facebook Live Video HERE to watch me paint the chairs (I promise it’s more exciting than it sounds) and get some chair painting tips.

It was VERY difficult to keep the painted stripes from bleeding under the tape due to the texture of the mesh, but we decided to go with it cuz real grain sack stripes aren’t perfect either.  #keepingitreal

The last step will be to spray on a clear protective coat to protect the chairs from the elements.

I am in love with this gorgeous table top!

  1. Hi Kim! First of all I love the table top! It looks so different.

Also I have had the very same issue with painting grainsack stripes on fabric. It’s very tricky!!! I just went with the distressed look :)

  2. This tabletop is amazing! I am so impressed with this makeover. I have those chairs also and they need updating. I will be doing this to my chairs.

  3. That is fantastic! I never would have thought to build a new table top. And the stripes on the chairs are the perfect touch! Way to go!

    1. Thank you sweet friend! I actually love doing live videos, even though I never thought I would, so let me know what you want to hear! :)

    1. Thank you so much Jeanie! We are excited to enjoy some evenings on our patio as soon as the weather warms back up! :)

    1. Aw, thanks Audra! I feel like I have a new patio set without spending a lot of money, and that makes me happy! :)

  5. I have similar chairs out in my backyard—and they aren’t looking so hot. Thanks for the great idea! … And thank you for hosting the blog hop. I had a lot of fun. ~Courtney

  6. Hi Kim: This is a wonderful makeover. Like you I have almost the same set sitting outback, but mine is sadly waiting in the rain to be redone. Mine is getting painted as well, I knew the colours but wasn’t sure what type of pattern to try for the chair backs. This is the perfect solution. Thanks for the inspiration.

  7. Curses!! I was at a garage sale lady week. A lady was selling two of the rocking or swivel chairs just like that with a little side table for $30! I tried to key inspiration hit me, but I’m so fixed on how I want my yard to look that I just passed. I love those chairs!
